Cooking Lessons
For those who wish to get to know Cretan cuisine more actively, we also offer traditional cooking classes. Together with our experienced chefs you will have the opportunity to learn step by step how to create favorite Cretan dishes or any other recipe of your choice.
During the lessons you will get to know its basic techniques.
Traditional dishes of the region include legumes such as lentils cooked with vegetables and aromatic herbs, pork or lamb cooked slowly with wine and cereals, as well as seafood dishes with fish and cuttlefish.
A particularly characteristic dish of Cretan cuisine is the snails, i.e. snails, which are usually cooked with vinegar and rosemary. Traditional pastries, such as bread made from ancient wheat varieties and local pies, also play an important role.
The Mediterranean Diet and the Ancient Greeks
The diet of the ancient Greeks was based on the so-called Mediterranean triad: wheat or barley, olive oil and wine. Legumes, vegetables, fruits, cheeses and fish were essential elements of the daily diet.
Meat was rarely consumed and especially on festive occasions. Instead, honey was used as a basic sweetener, since sugar was unknown in ancient times.
The ancient Greeks used to eat three basic meals a day: breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Of particular importance was the so-called symposium, a social gathering where people discussed, enjoyed food and drank wine.
Cretan cuisine, with its deep historical roots and pure ingredients, remains to this day one of the most important elements of the island's cultural identity. Through its flavors and aromas, visitors have the opportunity to experience an authentic side of Cretan tradition and hospitality.
